Tesla have announced their second generation Roadster and it certainly isn’t any slouch. Chief Executive of the American car company, Elon Musk, made some pretty bold claims about the new Roadster and what is to be expected from this electric ‘hypercar’. This new generation of the Roadster is a completely different animal to its predecessor; both in performance and in design.
Right, so let’s get into the good stuff. This car has a claimed 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed of over 250 mph and a battery life of over 600 miles! These are some serious numbers by anyones standard and if they are completely true then we’re in for a treat. Musk stated “The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars…”. I see this to be the first true electric rival to high-performance combustion cars.
From a design standpoint, it is quite a simple looking car, but in a modern and sophisticated kind of way; something Tesla have managed to pull off with all their models to date. Unlike the first generation Roadster, this one will have four seats which is something that is additionally impressive due to the extreme performance of the car as well.
The new Roadster will have three motors. One that will be positioned in the front of the car and the other two in the back. It will also have an all-wheel drive system and torque steering, which means that it will have extreme stability under acceleration to keep it planted in a straight line. There is no ‘official’ price tag for this car yet, but it has been expressed that it will be in the regions of $200-300,000, which sounds a lot, but for those kind of stats and four seats I really don’t think it’s too bad when you compare it to other cars within its realm of performance.
